Guakia Ambiente Wins Award for IAF-Supported Hydroelectric Project
Our community partner Guakia Ambiente recently won the People's Choice Award for Energy Supply in Climate CoLab's Climate Contests. In their IAF-supported project, Guakia Ambiente brings electricity to rural communities in the Dominican Republic and Haiti by installing hydroelectric systems. As a result, the communities see improved healthcare services, food security, employment, and education, among other benefits. Community members maintain the hydroelectric systems once they are installed, ensuring sustainability and allowing for future development with newly acquired technical skills and confidence.
You can read the contest proposal on Climate CoLab's site: Community micro hydropower generation in the Hispaniola island.
At the IAF, we support community-led solutions to expand economic opportunity and counteract environmental degradation by protecting the natural resources that communities depend on.
