The Organization for Youth Empowerment (OYE) is a nongovernmental organization (NGO) dedicated to serving Honduran youths at risk, their families and communities. OYE began its activities in 2005 and was legally constituted in 2011. Its board of nine directors meets annually and makes operational and financial decisions. The board’s committees oversee activities related to programs, finance and fundraising. An executive director oversees operations and supervises a program coordinator, an administrative assistant, and a communications and volunteer coordinator. Five OYE scholars work as youth coordinators who lead OYE’s program on community engagement that includes its online radio station, a quarterly magazine, a public-arts initiative, an annual sports tournament and cultural exchanges.
OYE will work with young Hondurans around El Progreso to develop programs in the arts and communication and offer services that benefit their communities.
OYE will use its IAF funds to improve its training in the arts, its publication, radio broadcasts via the Internet, internship opportunities for young people with media organizations, and the skills of its staff.
Rationale for funding:
San Pedro Sula is one of the most violent cities in Honduras and its crime, drugs, gangs and other illicit activities spill into Progreso, a satellite city where many young people neither have work nor actively attend school. OYE will work to encourage these youths to continue their education and develop their skills in the arts, communication, a variety of subjects related to community service, and leadership. OYE has a history of success with working productively with at-risk young people to develop their skills and abilities and with discouraging them from committing crimes, abusing drugs and joining gangs.
This project is expected to demonstrate that training young people at risk and developing their job and leadership skills can provide alternatives that lead to productive lives.
