Being Bold for Change in Guatemala
In celebration of International Women’s Day the Mexican Embassy on March 7 invited an Inter-American Foundation (IAF) grantee partner to talk about leadership and women making a difference in Guatemala.
Alicia Lopez, an indigenous Awakateka and executive director of Asociación Política de Mujeres Mayas Moloj (MOLOJ), spoke of how youth empowerment will leave a lasting impression on future generations to inspire gender equality, during a dialogue at the Mexican Embassy in Guatemala City, co-sponsored by the government of Canada.
Lopez was joined by another strong female groundbreaker, Guatemalan Attorney General (AG) Thelma Aldana Hernández de López, widely popular for her leadership and campaigns for more transparency in government in the Central American country.
MOLOJ, an IAF grantee partner since 2015, works with about 500 indigenous women in Guatemala to raise awareness on increased representation of marginalized groups in government, and emphasizes respect for indigenous women and for their participation in civic life. MOLOJ also has a close working relationship with the Guatemalan AG Office.
