Christy Turlington visits Ciné Institute
Fashion icon and activist Christy Turlington visited the campus of former IAF grantee Cine Institute, Haiti's first film school. She was joined by a group of representatives from Every Mother Counts, a non-profit she launched in 2010 to help reduce maternal and infant mortality through education and improved care. Turlington became exceedingly interested in maternal health issues after suffering near-fatal complications during the birth of her daughter. She regularly visits Haiti to monitor one of EMC's rural clinics, which provides health services and training for midwives.
Ciné Institute used its IAF grant to reach thousands of high school students in Jacmel and Port-au-Prince, providing training in film making. Its goal is to develop the Haitian film industry and create job opportunities for young people. Graduates of the program have produced videos for local and international advertisement firms, businesses and non-profits, as well as artistic films. The school maintains a clearinghouse to match candidates with jobs.
