We here at the Inter-American Foundation (IAF) join the United Nations in celebration of World Water Day. Every year, March 22 is dedicated to observing the role water plays in our daily lives, remembering the people who face water related issues and preparing for how we will manage water in the future. This year, World Water Day focuses on the central role that water plays in creating and supporting high quality jobs.
IAF grantee partner alum Servicios Multiples de Tecnologias Apropriadas (SEMTA) works to strengthen the pastoral-agricultural economy of three municipalities in the Pacajes department of the Bolivian altiplano region. The organization helps improve farmers’ access to and conservation of water. SEMTA supports irrigation and water collection technologies designed to recuperate and expand native pastures. These practices increase the production of livestock (for example camelids, sheep and cattle), native grains and greenhouse vegetables. In turn, the communities ensure food security as well as future jobs in water management and agriculture.Photo: courtesy SEMTA
